Aochuang Sign is a factory in Lu'an, Anhui, China. Stainless steel letters run $15 to $40 per letter depending on type and finish. Non-lit letters start around $15. 3D fabricated stainless letters can run up to $120. The spread covers simple flat letters through more complex 3D work.
Material thickness is a big part of cost. Standard stock is 1.0 to 3.0mm. For outdoor jobs or longer letters, we recommend 5mm or thicker. That adds strength and cost. Finishes such as brushed #4, mirror #8, PVD, and powder coat also change the price.
Bulk orders usually bring the per-letter cost down. You're buying factory-direct, so there's no retail markup. On large jobs, that difference adds up fast.
The final price on a stainless sign comes from a few main things. Once you understand them, it's easier to compare quotes.
Material is the first cost. Stainless steel is not cheap, especially 304 and 316 grades. 304 is the workhorse and usually holds up outdoors for 10+ years. 316 has added molybdenum for marine and industrial use, lasts 15+ years outdoors, and costs about 20-30% more. Price also moves with thickness.
Production is the second cost. We run a 10-step process from design confirmation through export packing: laser cutting, TIG welding, and QC at each stage. That labor and checking adds to the price, but it's what keeps the letters clean and square. Lead time is usually about 5-15 days, including design sign-off, material ordering, and production.
Shipping is separate from the letter price. Express on small orders can add $30-100. Air freight runs around $4-12 per kilogram. Sea freight is usually cheaper for volume but takes about 65 days. Plan for those costs when you budget.
Certifications can also add cost. UL 48 runs $4,000-$15,000 depending on sign complexity and the audits required. Some jurisdictions won't accept a sign without it.
Grade choice affects how long the letters last and what you pay. We work mostly with 304 and 316.
304 is the standard. It has 18% chromium and 8% nickel, bends and welds well, and handles most outdoor locations for 10+ years. At our factory, 304 letters run $15 to $40 per letter depending on design and finish.
316 is marine-grade. It has 2-3% molybdenum added, which holds up much better around saltwater and industrial fallout. That grade costs 20-30% more than 304 because the material is more expensive and harder on tooling.
Not every install needs 316. Most inland locations do fine with 304. Match the grade to the environment and how long the sign is expected to stay up.
QC is a real cost in factory-direct stainless letters, even if it isn't obvious. Our 10-step process includes an 8-12 hour aging test on each letter so the material settles before packing. Every piece is 100% inspected before export. Those steps add cost, but they're the reason the letters leave here straight and stay that way. I had a client skip the aging test once to save money. The letters warped after installation, and he paid for a full redo. So QC isn't just about avoiding callbacks; it's about how long the product lasts. CE certification for our letters costs a few thousand dollars and takes 2-8 weeks. It's part of meeting European safety standards. It adds cost, but it's part of doing the job right.
