Straight from our 2024 price sheet: factory-direct front-lit channel letters run $20–80 per letter. Back-lit halo letters are $35–120. Stainless steel non-lit letters, $15–40. For a typical storefront sign with ten letters, that's $200–800 from us.
Your local fabricator will quote $200–700 per letter for front-lit installed. That's $2,000–7,000 for the same ten-letter sign. Even after you pay freight, customs, and a local electrician, you're still ahead 40–60%.
The ugly truth is the local guy isn't ripping you off. He's paying American rent, American wages, and buying materials at retail from a distributor who also needs to eat. He's also carrying liability insurance, pull permits, and doing site visits. That overhead is real. You're not paying for the letter — you're paying for all the stuff around it.

What Factory Price Actually Buys You
Let's break down a typical
front-lit channel letter we ship. The shell is 304 stainless or aluminum, 1.0–2.0mm thick. Acrylic face with 90–92% light transmittance — Mitsubishi or Degussa material, not the cheap domestic stuff that yellows in 18 months. LEDs are Samsung or Osram modules, SMD 2835, rated L70 at 50,000 hours. We seal everything with neutral silicone and run every sign through an 8–12 hour aging test before it goes in a crate.
That's what your $60 per letter buys. The same materials a US fabricator uses — hell, he buys them from the same Taiwanese and Korean suppliers. We just don't have his rent.
But here's what nobody tells you about LED quality: cheap Chinese modules die in 12–18 months. We've all seen those signs with the "hamburger" effect — one letter dark, one flickering. Sea freight is cheaper — $80–200 per cubic meter for LCL — but it takes 50–70 days. You have to plan that far ahead. If you call us on Monday and need the sign by Friday, don't. We can't help you. That's what a local fabricator is for.
Then there's the US Section 301 tariff, roughly 30% on imported signs. You'll pay that at the port. It's not a surprise, but it's a line item people forget when they're comparing quotes.
And customs brokers charge $150–400 per entry. You need one. No, you can't do it yourself, and yes, I've seen guys try and pay triple in demurrage fees.
I've seen this go wrong: a guy in Denver bought a 20-letter sign from a factory in Guangdong — not ours, but same deal. The factory used 1.0mm acrylic instead of 3mm because the buyer never specified. The wire connections were solder blobs, not terminal blocks. The sign passed the factory's "QC" in two minutes. It lasted nine months before the LEDs started dying. He spent $2,000 on the sign, $800 on shipping, $600 on a local electrician to fix it, and then $3,000 with a local shop to rebuild it properly.
The problem wasn't importing. The problem was he bought from a factory that treated him like a one-shot customer. That's why I'm telling you this: not every factory is honest. We are — because we've been doing this for 13 years and want you to come back.
When Your Local Fabricator Is the Right Call
I'll be straight with you: there are jobs you should not send to China.
Anything that needs a site survey, structural engineering, permits, or installation — that's local. We're not climbing a scaffold to mount letters on a stucco wall in Ohio. We're not dealing with your building inspector or your landlord's requirements. We make the metal and plastic part. That's it.
Also, if you need a sign in less than 10 days, forget it. Our lead time is about 5-15 days, plus shipping. That's 3–5 weeks minimum. Local fabrication can have it up in two weeks.
And if you need ADA-compliant tactile signs with Grade 2 Braille, don't buy those from us. We can make them, sure, but the local shop handles the installation, the specs vary by jurisdiction, and the liability is yours. Not worth it.
So when do you use us? When you have a project planned two months out, and you want to save 50% on the product. When you're a sign shop that wants to resell our letters at triple our price. When you're a contractor managing a multi-site rollout and you need 14 identical letters for a national chain — we make that easy.

Certifications: What's Real and What's Theater
Every factory claims CE. Every factory claims IP65. Most of them can't tell you what the test parameters are.
Here's a hard fact: CE certification costs 20,000–50,000 RMB and takes 2–8 weeks. A lot of factories just download a logo and slap it on the website. Ask to see the actual test report — the certificate with the issue date and the product model that was tested. If they can't send it in 24 hours, they don't have it.
And IP65? That's dust-tight and water jets from any direction. It doesn't mean your sign survives a Florida hurricane. For coastal environments, you want IP66 or IP68, and you want 316 stainless steel — not 304. The 316 costs 20–30% more and contains 2–3% molybdenum to resist salt corrosion. For a strip mall in Ohio, 304 is fine. For Miami Beach, pay for 316.
You also need to know about UL 48 for the US. That's $4,000–15,000 in testing, 4–9 months, and quarterly factory audits. Most Chinese factories don't have it. We have CE, RoHS, and ISO 9001, but we're not UL-listed. If you absolutely need UL, you'll pay a big factory in Guangdong that does nothing but UL signs — or you'll buy from a local US assembler who puts the UL label on a sign using our components.
Don't ask us to fake a UL sticker. That's illegal, and it gets people killed. Not doing it.
How to Buy Smart From a Factory (Checklist)
- Send us your font file and your exact measurements. We'll give you a CAD drawing with cut lines within a day. That's your baseline.
- Specify everything: material (304/316 stainless, aluminum, acrylic thickness), LED brand (Samsung, Osram, or domestic), color temperature (3000K, 4000K, 6000K), and finish (brushed #4, mirror #8, PVD).
- Ask for sample photos of similar work, not renderings. Real photos, with a ruler in the frame.
- Get the shipping quote in writing, and ask for the incoterms. FOB means you pay everything from the port. DDP means we handle it all.
- Budget for tariffs and broker fees. The 30% Section 301 tariff is real, and it hits at the border.
- Order a spare power supply and a few extra LED modules. Shipping a spare later costs more than buying it now.
We've got
stainless steel letters that survive a decade outdoors, and aluminum letters that weigh a third as much and never rust. Both are good choices — you just need to pick the right one for your climate.
The Bottom Line (Said Like a Guy Who's Welded 5,000 Letters)
Look, I've watched American sign shops double their margin by buying from factories like ours. I've also seen homeowners try to import a single sign and end up with a box of scrap. The difference is planning, specs, and knowing who you're buying from.
